In 2008, the Over-the-Rhine Foundation received funding for the OTR Green-Historic Study. Among its findings, the study concluded that buildings constructed prior to the 1920s have nearly the same level of energy efficiency as that of new construction. Built before the availability of air conditioning, for example, many of these buildings used windows and materials designed to maximize air flow in summer and retain heat in winter.
In OTR, green and historic are natural partners. With approximately 500 vacant buildings and hundreds more in need of extensive redevelopment, we are presented with an incredible opportunity. Why not set the goal of making OTR America’s greenest historic neighborhood?
The OTR Foundation worked with Habitat for Humanity, OTR Community Housing, SOL Developments, and other project partners to implement the study’s findings and develop quality housing for Habitat families in 2011.
